About...

I'm A Prince Charming Fan Because...

Mainly because I love complex characters, especially those who are more than they pretend to be, and Prince Charming is a perfect example of such a character.

When he's first introduced, he's amusing, but appears little more than a shallow, selfish jerk who uses women to support him. In other words, the total opposite of what we'd image a "Prince Charming" ought to be like. Then we slowly begin to see there's more to the guy than the charming, selfish jerk. Oh, he's still something of a selfish bastard, but there's a lot going on beneath his carefully maintained facade.

By the time I finished reading A Most Troublesome Woman from the recent 1001 Nights of Snowfall, I was even more convinced that Prince Charming's character would grow more interesting as Willingham's story progresses.

I really like how PC's campaign to run for mayor of Fabletown is shown to be similar to how he pursues a relationship with a woman: he's absolutely dedicated and focused...until he gets what he wants and the challenge evaporates. The only difference now is that unlike his past wives, this job isn't going to throw up its arms in exasperation and divorce him; he has no choice but to stick around and handle every crisis and new challenge that comes his way.

A Most Troublesome Woman hints that at a deeper reason for the failed marriage between Snow and Prince Charming, and it's something that also might account for why he now behaves the way he does with everyone, not just women. While there may be something to Beauty's statement that he exudes "a dress-hiking, panty-dropping musk" as part of his powers, I wouldn't be at all surprised if things turn out to be a bit more complex than that. (And what's the likelihood that Frau Totenkinder's blitz of princely curses totally missed one of the most famous princes of all?)

Series Information

Fables is a Vertigo comic book series created and written by Bill Willingham. It takes place in a continuity of its own, and is unrelated to the larger DC Comics continuity. The series deals with various characters from fairy tales and folklore who have been forced out of their native lands by a mysterious enemy known as the Adversary. They travel to our world and form a clandestine community in New York City known as Fabletown. Characters from fables with non-human appearance must live at the "Farm" in upstate New York. ~ from Wikipedia

About Prince Charming

While he is charming and handsome, Prince Charming is by nature a womanizer, liar and a general rogue. His (known) previous wives in chronological order were Snow White, Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty) and Cinderella. He lived in Europe after leaving the Homelands, living off the kindness of various nobles and ex-nobles. He returned to Fabletown just prior to Rose Red's "murder". [...] Theories both on and off the page speculate that he gives off powerful/magic pheromones, which are responsible for his strong ability to seduce nearly any woman he makes the attempt with. ~ from Wikipedia
